Staalplaat Sound System (NL/DE)

An art collective from Berlin interested in how to make instruments out of different objects, obsolete electronics, old vinyl records, or an entire building.

The initiators of Staalplaat Sound System are the sound artist Geert-Jan Hobijn (graphic designer and founder of Staalplaat) and Carsten Stabenow. At the heart of their approach is a low-tech philosophy, their aim is to make installations appear simple, revealing ratherthan concealing how they are made.

Staalplaat Sound System has been showing works at many international festivals, museums, galeries and events like Avanto (Helsinki), Sonar (Barcelona), 798 South Gate space (Beijing), DEAF (Rotterdam), Transmediale (Berlin), DOM (Moscow), Ars Electronica (Linz), Todaysart (Den Haag), MOCA Taipei, Museeum Weserburg (Bremen), Townhouse Gallery (Cairo), Steirischer Herbst ( Graz), ZKM (Karlsruhe), Palais de Tokyo (Paris) and Dis-patch in Belgrade...

Instrument building workshop
Kids have learnt how they can make instruments from the objects and machines that can be found in their kitchen or storage. With a bit of research and modification, mixers, vacuum cleaners and appliances alike can go through a musical symbiosis with the well-known children’s instruments.
